Always Connected

Communication is how we transfer information to one another. What sets us apart from other species in our planet is that we have a higher level of communication skills. By learning how to speak we can convey our feelings and our thoughts.

Aside from the ability to speak, we can also communicate through gestures. Humans, having developed the ability to communicate both through speech and gestures, were able to dominate this planet. Because of our insatiable appetite for information, humans throughout our existence developed other forms of communication, from writing to telecommunications.

Telecommunication is the assisted transmission over a distance for the purpose of communication. In earlier times, this may have involved the use of smoke signals, drums, semaphore, flags or heliograph. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecommunication)

Today, telecommunications is the technology to send information over long distances via electronic means. Modern technology has given us the ability to communicate over the telephone and the internet.

Try searching the internet, and you will learn that the first practical telegraph was invented by Samuel Morse sometime in the 1830s. The telephone was invented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell. Dr. Martin Cooper invented the technology responsible for the cellphone. He made the first cellphone call in 1973. Internet, as we know it today, only became popular in the mid 1990s.

Billions of information criss-cross the internet everyday. E-mails are being sent as we read this article. Some of the information written here were even searched over the the internet. It has become the fastest growing media of sharing information.

The internet together with the advancement in mobile communications has catapulted us in the Digital Age. The telephone, probably one of the greatest achievements of man in  communicating, has evolved. Whereas before its infrastructure is a standalone web of hardwires, it is gradually being replaced by telephones over the internet, using voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology. The internet and the mobile world is being  merged.

Mobile phone technology has also embraced the Digital Age. Modern technology has given us the ability to access our e-mails via mobile phones. We can also connect to the internet with our mobile phones. It has given us the ability to get in touch anywhere in the world, whether via voice communication, text messaging, or video calls.

Our homes are also beginning to change. Before we only have fixed phones, now broadband internet service is becoming common in a household. Wireless internet access is also becoming popular. Our homes are being transformed into a wifi zone. With the cost of owning computers going down, it is not uncommon for a single household to own several desktop,  laptop, or  netbook computers.

Commercial wifi zones are also expanding. Anywhere we go, from coffee shops to malls, wifi access logo can be seen. With the sale of netbook computers increasing, more wifi zones will be developed. We can access information anywhere we go using our computers and mobile phones. We can communicate anywhere as long as there is internet access or mobile phone signals which is practically anywhere. The world is actually shrinking because a lot of people are being connected every second.

The Digital Age is a concept linked to the Information Age. We live in an era where information is precious. An era wherein access and transfer of great amount of information is vital. Information is being transferred at an unprecedented amount. Even hospitals are making use of the technology we have now that they can transfer large files of medical images anywhere in the world. Online transactions are becoming common such as banking and shopping. These will not be possible without digital technology.

We have come a long way in terms of communication. From using our natural ability to speak, to modern telecommunication technologies, we all have one thing in common, the desire to be always connected.
